Except for backsplashes, kitchen ceramic wall tiles used mainly in bathrooms. Relatively simple to install, but it requires your attention, particularly with respect to the sealing of the area covered with tiles.

The choice of ceramic wall

Choose a ceramic mural is almost art, given the variety of colors and sizes available. You can find tiles ranging from 2.5 x 2.5 cm (1 inch by 1 inch) to 30 x 60 cm. Of course, you’ll probably be tempted by the latest fashionable colors. But will you also believe in a few months? Surely you do not want to resume working in two or three years because green choice is not very “trendy”. Conversely, do not hesitate to create a pattern. Dare colors, contrasts. Use tiles of different sizes that you will enjoy match, even if the work will require more attention from you. Some even use ceramic floor on the walls of the bathroom. That says it all.

The choice of materials

On the market, you will find drywall moisture resistant. Attention, as its name suggests, it is moisture resistant, not water. And we all know that water damage can occur in a bathroom. It is therefore preferable to select basic materials more resistant, especially around the bath and shower. My experience has taught me that the plywood is ideal. One day, I redid the bathroom in my parents’ house, built in the 60s. Under the coating of the shower, I found the plywood, blackened, but still in excellent condition. I just had to wash the wood with a solution of bleach, to kill germs and mold, before undertaking the work. I suggest you plywood, made of wood and glue, you’ll gain.

Tip: while you’re there, why not make small alcoves to lay shower gel, soap and shampoo, often bulky in a small shower. Make a solid frame, slightly sloping, then cover with plywood. He left to do is install the ceramic in these cavities. The slope will allow water to flow. This work, however, require many calculations and patience. Once you have installed plywood, seal joints with silicone mold resistant. Before laying the ceramic, add a moisture barrier around your shower and / or your bathroom, even on the floor. For better adhesion, use of ceramic glue trowel and a V 3/16 inch. Feel free to overlap the edges of at least 10 cm (4 inches). Install the film from the bottom up respecting and scrupulously, the manufacturer’s instructions which clearly illustrate the method to use. Once the membrane is installed, wait 24 hours. If you install your ceramic membrane and gypsum board, paper and seal it before the joints with an oil primer. The resist material more moisture.

Laying ceramic wall: laying

First, it will align the tiles so that when asked, they are as straight as possible. Using your chalk line, draw squares of 4 feet by 4 feet. Measure a distance of 3 feet on one side and the other 4 feet. The hypotenuse (the distance between two points) should be 5 feet. If this is not the case, measure again on one side. This way, your work will be square. Once obtained the exact measurements, use a marker to redo the lines drawn with the chalk.

This step, you are at the stage of laying the ceramic. Start down on the floor or the bathroom. If your ceramic is less than 20 cm by 20 cm (8 inches by 8 inches), use a trowel V 3/16 inch. For a ceramic larger, use a notched trowel ¼ inch square. Small plastic spiders will underpin the first row of ceramic. Spread the glue, then place a first tile. With the hand, made some twist to make sure the adhesive bond. If the square does not move, you made the right choice with adhesive pre-mixed, and tools.Install only four or five squares at a time. This prevents the glue dries too fast. After asking a dozen tiles, evaluate your work. If everything is right (or so), continue. Otherwise, use braces to correct minor imperfections. Leave a gap of at least 1/16 inch for grouting.

Install ceramic wall: the cuts

You may need to make some cuts to the pipe or to adjust the ceramic near a window, for example. Use a ceramic wafer to cut your tiles in a straight line. For more complex cuts, use an angle grinder (buffer) with a diamond blade. Prepare a template that matches your needs to do the job well. Use duct tape (Duck Tape) on all four sides of your templates to keep them in place.

For pipes, rent a hole saw with diamond points to perform a professional job. Again, use a template. Drill the hole a little larger than the pipe diameter for your convenience. You can hide it with a chrome ring. Tip: when you cut the ceramic or drill holes, put water in a container of dish washing liquid. Water the area regularly. This way you will avoid too much dust to clear and avoid overheating of the blade. Once the ceramic in place, wait 24 hours to fill the grout joints.

Laying ceramic wall: grout

For the coulis, two options are available: conventional grout, unsanded, and epoxy grout more stain resistant. You will however need a teammate. Remove the spacers and fill the grout joint using a rubber float, slid diagonally for a better finish. You’ll also need sponges with a softer side, and the other rougher, sold in hardware stores. Wash the tiles immediately. Very sticky, the epoxy-based grout dries quickly and becomes difficult to remove.

If you chose the traditional grout, wait 48 hours, then brush the material with a sealant. Seal joints between the tiles and the bath, and all the interior angles, using the silicone mold proof. You will find the clear silicone or various shades which harmonize with that of your grout. Well, that’s it.Twenty-four hours later, take a shower first, or a bath, in good company. Light some candles, run the water at the perfect temperature and invite your partner to join you in your new decor. After all, you’ve earned it.
