The seats have an advantage: tailor-made, they can be installed anywhere, or almost: in front of a window, to hide a staircase, on a bare wall in a dining room, game room, however there some rules to follow.

The seat

The base should measure 18 inches in height to comply with the height of a standard table, for example. Moreover, this is the perfect height to rest her legs well. By making the foundation, do not forget to provide an angle for the folder. It should reach a height of 48 inches to effectively support the back and head. The top should be about 4 inches away from the base. You must therefore take steps even before cutting the pieces of your seat. You can also make folders rights. However, your guests uncomfortable, sit down there as long.

So I built the caissons Aspenite , 18 inches high, with staples and glue, leaving an opening on top. Then I covered the plywood boxes that I screwed on the Aspenite . Tip : Measure the thickness of two sheets and then choose your screws that have 1/8 inch less than the total thickness. The screws will never exceed. Once you finish material well glued and screwed, and edge banding installed, I used my router to a encavure of 1/8 inch by 1/8 inch on the joint, at the junction of two parts. It’s more attractive. Moreover, it keeps me from making cuts to 45 degrees.

The seat

Once the casing manufactured, I undertook the manufacture of the seat. For comfort reasons, I chose to cut my pieces of Aspenite adding 4 inches to the front, to slide my legs slightly behind. Then, even before placing the piece I made, and laid planks shaped “L” on the back of the seat, towards the interior of the caissons. In this way, the seat will not rise if someone puts pressure on the front.

The file

As described above, my file will be 48 inches high from the ground. I therefore took my measurements for the perfect dimensions. Then I cut my piece in half (about 15 inches) wide. I noted these new dimensions. They will be very useful for me to step padding. Once the pieces obtained, I removed the inch on each side. I opted for the same system boards “L” shaped to fit my case. This way it will stay in place.

Caution : If you choose to install a bench or a lower back on a bench that will conceal the stairs leading to a lower floor, make sure the railing is 42 inches high from the above your seat. You definitely do not want your guests falling into the stairwell.

Once the timbers in place, you just have to stain and varnish the exposed parts of your seat, those covered with plywood. Spread with a brush, two coats of stain you essuierez gel with a dry cloth. Let dry 24 hours between coats. You will need all the varnish. Get a water-based varnish and extend the first two layers using a paint roller miniature long haired. Then smooth the varnish with a brush before it dries. You have to wait about four hours between coats.

Between the second and third application, sanding with sandpaper No. 320 or 400 (number of grains per square inch). Use a cheese cloth to remove dust from peeling and impurities. This saves you from spending a wet rag on your nail, which would dilute the slightly. Remember, it takes at least 30 days for the paint, or varnish to reach its maximum hardness.
